What is a Rain & Light Sensor Windscreen?

Glass fitted with sensors that trigger your wipers and headlights automatically.

Rain + light sensorSensor detects rain → wipers; senses dusk → lights on automatically

In plain English

Many modern cars have a small rain and light sensor pod mounted to the inside of the windscreen, just behind the rear-view mirror. It detects raindrops on the glass for automatic wipers and ambient light for automatic headlights.

A simple analogy

"Like an outdoor light that knows when it's getting dark — the car just handles wipers and lights for you."

How it works

The sensor uses infrared beams that bounce off the inside of the glass. Raindrops on the outside scatter the beam, telling the wipers to speed up. When the sensor is replaced or refitted, it must sit in the correct area of the glass with the right bracket and gel pad, otherwise the auto functions stop working properly.

Signs of trouble

  • Auto wipers run constantly or never come on
  • Headlights stay on in daylight or fail to come on at dusk
  • Sensor pod loose or hanging from the glass
  • Warning light for rain/light sensor on the dash
