What is a Starter Motor?

The muscle that turns your engine over when you twist the key.

Simplified animation — not to scale.

In plain English

The starter motor is a powerful electric motor that spins the engine fast enough for it to fire up. Once the engine is running, the starter disengages.

A simple analogy

"Like the pull cord on a lawnmower — it gets things spinning, then steps aside."

How it works

When you turn the key (or press start), the battery sends a burst of current to the starter. A small gear pops out, meshes with the engine's flywheel, and cranks it round.

Signs of trouble

  • Clicking sound but no crank
  • Engine cranks slowly
  • Sometimes starts, sometimes doesn't
  • Grinding noise when starting
Rough UK cost

£200 – £450 fitted
