EV Maintenance & Servicing

What you no longer need to worry about, and what still needs regular attention.

What you no longer worry about

  • Oil changes — no engine means no engine oil
  • Spark plugs, timing belts, exhaust systems
  • Fuel filters and fuel system maintenance
  • Frequent brake pad replacement — regen does most of the work

What still needs attention

  • Tyres — EVs are heavier and can wear tyres faster
  • Brake fluid and mechanical brake checks
  • Coolant systems for battery and motor
  • Cabin air filters, wipers, suspension, 12V battery
  • Software updates via OTA or the manufacturer's app

Servicing intervals and cost

Manufacturers still recommend annual or mileage-based intervals, but each service is usually lighter than for an equivalent ICE car — there's no engine to service. Many owners find annual running costs are noticeably lower. Battery warranties are typically longer (commonly 8 years) than the standard vehicle warranty.

MOT considerations (UK)

EVs still require an MOT from three years old, but naturally skip emissions checks. Braking, tyres, lights and steering/suspension are all still assessed as normal.

A simple annual checklist

  • Tyre tread and pressure check
  • Brake fluid check/replacement per schedule
  • Coolant system check
  • 12V battery health check
  • Software/firmware update check
  • Standard safety checks (lights, wipers, suspension)
