Keyless Entry Explained

Unlock and lock your car without taking the key out of your pocket or bag.

What is Keyless Entry?

Keyless Entry allows you to unlock and lock your car without taking the key out of your pocket or bag. As long as the key is nearby, the car recognises it automatically.

How does it work?

The vehicle constantly sends out a short-range radio signal. When the key comes within range, it responds with its own encrypted signal. If the car recognises the key, it unlocks the doors when you pull the handle. Many vehicles also allow you to lock the car by touching a sensor on the door handle.

What does it feel like to use?

Instead of searching for your keys every time you approach the car, you simply walk up, open the door and get in. The process feels almost automatic.

What are the benefits?

  • Faster and more convenient access
  • No need to remove keys from pockets or bags
  • Particularly useful when carrying shopping or luggage

Are there any security risks?

Some older systems are vulnerable to "relay attacks". This involves thieves using equipment to extend the signal from your key inside your house to unlock the vehicle. Modern cars often include improved security measures and motion-sensing keys that stop transmitting when left stationary.

Common problems

  • Key battery running low
  • Car fails to detect the key
  • Interference from other electronic devices
  • Faulty door handle sensor

Can I still use a normal key?

Most keyless systems include a hidden emergency key that can be used if the battery fails.
