What is an Android Auto?
Your Android phone, projected onto the dashboard.
Simplified animation — not to scale.
In plain English
Google's version of CarPlay — it mirrors a simplified set of Android apps (Google Maps, Waze, Spotify, WhatsApp messages, calls) onto the car's display.
A simple analogy
"It's the same idea as CarPlay but for the green-robot crowd — a stripped-back, road-safe view of your phone."
How it works
Connect your Android phone over USB or wirelessly. The phone runs Android Auto and sends a streamlined interface to the car screen. Google Assistant handles voice for navigation, replies and music — so you don't touch the phone.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Phone connects but Android Auto doesn't launch
- ⚠Audio cuts out during calls
- ⚠Google Maps loses GPS lock
- ⚠Wireless connection keeps re-pairing
Rough UK cost
Usually free if the car supports it; aftermarket head units £200–£600
Parts: Built into the infotainment system
