What is an Apple CarPlay?

iPhone, simplified, on the car screen.

iPhone mirrors a simplified driver-friendly interface onto the car's screen

Simplified animation — not to scale.

In plain English

A feature that takes your iPhone's key apps — Maps, Music, Messages, Phone, Podcasts — and shows them on the car's touchscreen in a driver-friendly layout.

A simple analogy

"Like docking your phone into the dashboard — but the car turns it into a big-button version designed not to distract you."

How it works

Plug your iPhone in via USB (or connect wirelessly on newer cars). The phone streams a CarPlay interface to the car screen, while the car's touch, buttons, mic and speakers act as the controls. Siri handles voice commands hands-free.

Signs of trouble

  • Won't launch when phone is plugged in
  • Audio plays but no screen mirroring
  • Wireless CarPlay disconnects mid-journey
  • Maps freezes or lags
Rough UK cost

Usually free if the car supports it; aftermarket head units £200–£600
