In plain English

A car service is a scheduled inspection and replacement of wear items — oil, filters, brakes, fluids and more — performed at set mileage or time intervals (usually yearly or every 10,000–12,000 miles in the UK).

A simple analogy

"Like a yearly check-up at the GP — much cheaper to catch a small issue early than to wait for it to become a breakdown."

How it works

UK garages typically offer five tiers — they overlap, so always check the actual checklist before booking. 1) Oil & filter change (£60–£120). The cheapest option. Drain old engine oil, fit a new oil filter, refill with the correct grade. No other checks. Good as a top-up between proper services, or for high-mileage drivers who service in stages. 2) Interim service (£90–£160, every 6 months or 6,000 miles). Oil & filter change plus a basic safety inspection — lights, wipers, tyres, brakes, fluid levels, battery, suspension visual check. Around 30–40 check points. Aimed at high-mileage or older cars between full services. 3) Full service (£150–£260, yearly or 12,000 miles). Everything in an interim, plus air filter, fuel additive, more detailed brake inspection, deeper fluid checks and around 60–70 check points. The "standard" yearly service most UK drivers should have. 4) Major service (£250–£450, every 2 years or 24,000 miles). Everything in a full service, plus spark plugs (petrol), fuel filter (diesel), cabin/pollen filter, brake fluid change and sometimes coolant. Around 70+ check points. Restores the car closer to "as new" running condition. 5) Manufacturer (main dealer) service (£200–£600+). Follows the carmaker's exact schedule using genuine parts and brand-specific diagnostics — required to keep an approved-used or PCP warranty valid. More expensive, but stamps the official service book and protects resale value. Servicing is separate from the MOT — the MOT is a legal annual safety test from year 3; a service is voluntary preventative maintenance. Under the Block Exemption Regulation you can use an independent garage and still keep your manufacturer warranty, as long as they use parts of matching quality and stamp the book.

Signs of trouble

  • Service light or spanner icon on the dashboard
  • It's been over a year (or your mileage interval) since the last one
  • Engine oil looks black/gritty on the dipstick
  • Brakes, clutch or steering feel different to usual
  • Stamp missing from the service book before resale
