What are Child Locks?
Keep little passengers safely inside
Simplified animation — not to scale.
In plain English
Child locks are safety devices fitted to the rear doors of most cars that prevent passengers in the back seats from opening the doors from the inside. The doors can still be opened normally from the outside by an adult, giving parents peace of mind while driving.
"Imagine a hotel room door with a chain guard. Someone inside cannot open the door fully because the chain stops them. The child lock works the same way — it puts a barrier between the handle and the latch so little hands cannot accidentally open the door while the car is moving."
How it works
A small mechanical lever or switch is built into the edge of each rear door, usually only accessible when the door is wide open. When engaged, this switch moves an internal metal tab that physically blocks the interior door handle from connecting to the latch mechanism. Turning the child lock on means pulling the interior handle does nothing — the latch stays shut. From the outside, the exterior handle operates a separate linkage that bypasses the child lock entirely, so an adult can still open the door.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Child lock lever broken or jammed in one position
- ⚠Door not opening from the outside even with child lock off
- ⚠Difficulty engaging or disengaging the lock switch
- ⚠Rear door handle feeling loose or disconnected inside
- ⚠Unusual rattling from the door edge where the lock mechanism sits
£35 to £90 total per door
