What is a Clutch?

Connects and disconnects the engine from the wheels.

In plain English

In a manual car, the clutch lets you smoothly engage the engine to the gearbox. Pressing the pedal separates them so you can change gear; releasing it reconnects them.

A simple analogy

"Like pressing two spinning plates together — full contact = full power, no contact = nothing."

How it works

A spring-loaded friction plate is squeezed against the engine's flywheel. Press the pedal and the plate is released, breaking the connection.

Signs of trouble

  • Slipping (revs rise but car doesn't accelerate)
  • Hard or spongy clutch pedal
  • Burning smell when pulling away
  • Difficulty changing gear
Rough UK cost

£500 – £1,200 fitted (labour-heavy job)
