What is a Differential?

Lets your driven wheels turn at different speeds in corners.

DIFFInner (slower)Outer (faster)In a corner, each wheel turns at its own speed

Simplified animation — not to scale.

In plain English

A clever set of gears in the axle (or gearbox on front-wheel-drive cars) that splits the power between the two driven wheels.

A simple analogy

"It is the wheels' negotiator — making sure each one turns at exactly the speed it needs to in a corner, instead of fighting each other."

How it works

In a straight line both wheels turn at the same speed. In a corner, the outer wheel has further to travel, so the diff lets it spin faster than the inner one without the tyres skipping.

Signs of trouble

  • Whining or howling noise that changes with speed
  • Clunk when pulling away or changing direction
  • Vibration on cornering
  • Oil leak from the axle
