What is a Fuel Filter?

Keeps rust, water and grit out of your injectors.

Fuel filterDirtyClean

Simplified animation — not to scale.

In plain English

A small inline canister between the fuel tank and the engine that traps contaminants in the fuel before they reach the precision injectors.

A simple analogy

"It is a coffee filter for your fuel — cheap to change, but skip it and the gritty bits ruin everything downstream."

How it works

All fuel passes through it on the way to the engine. Over time it clogs with dirt and (in diesels) water, restricting flow and starving the engine.

Signs of trouble

  • Loss of power, especially under acceleration
  • Difficult starting
  • Engine stalling
  • Misfires at higher revs
Rough UK cost

£60–£200, usually a service item

Parts: £15–£60
Labour: £40–£120
