What is a Fuel Pump?

Pushes fuel from the tank up to the engine.

Simplified animation — not to scale.

In plain English

An electric pump (usually inside the fuel tank on modern cars) that pressurises the fuel system so the injectors have something to spray.

A simple analogy

"It is the engine's water pistol pump — without it, no matter how hard you squeeze the trigger, nothing comes out."

How it works

When you turn the key, the pump primes the system, then keeps fuel flowing at high pressure to the injectors whenever the engine is running.

Signs of trouble

  • Long cranking before the engine starts
  • Whining or buzzing from the rear of the car
  • Engine cuts out at speed
  • No-start with no fuel pressure
