What is a Heated Steering Wheel?

In plain English

A heated steering wheel has a thin heating element built into the rim, just underneath the leather or trim. Press the button and within a minute or two the wheel feels pleasantly warm, which on a frosty morning makes a huge difference before your gloves come off.

A simple analogy

"Like wrapping your hands around a warm mug — but it's the wheel doing the work."

How it works

A flexible heating element is wrapped around the wheel's rim and connected through the steering column via a slip-ring (so it keeps contact as you turn the wheel). A control module powers it up, monitors temperature with a sensor, and switches it off once the wheel reaches a set temperature — usually around 30°C.

Signs of trouble

  • Wheel only warms in patches or on one side
  • No heat at all when button is pressed
  • Heating works intermittently as you turn the wheel (slip-ring fault)
  • Burning smell from the column
  • Button light flashes and switches itself off
Rough UK cost

£350–£1,000

Parts: £150–£500 (element or full wheel)
Labour: £200–£500 (column work, airbag removal)
