What is a Turbocharger?

Squeezes more air into the engine for extra power.

Simplified animation — not to scale.

In plain English

A turbo uses energy from the exhaust to spin a fan that forces more air into the engine. More air means more fuel can be burned, which means more power from a smaller engine.

A simple analogy

"Like blowing on a campfire — more air, bigger flames."

How it works

Exhaust gas spins a turbine wheel. That wheel is connected to a second wheel (the compressor) that pushes pressurised air into the cylinders.

Signs of trouble

  • Loss of power or 'limp mode'
  • Whistling or whining sound that gets louder
  • Blue/grey smoke from the exhaust
  • Engine management light
Rough UK cost

£800 – £2,500 fitted
