Automatic Headlights Explained

Turns the headlights on and off depending on ambient light.

Ambient-light sensor on the dash flips lights on when the sky darkens

What are Automatic Headlights?

With the light switch in 'Auto', the car decides when to turn the headlights on — at dusk, in tunnels, in heavy rain, or under low cloud.

How do they work?

A small light sensor (usually on top of the dashboard near the windscreen) constantly measures ambient brightness. Below a set threshold the car switches the side and headlights on; above it, they go off.

What does it feel like?

You drive into a tunnel and the lights come on instantly. Sunset arrives and they slip on without you noticing.

Benefits

  • You can't forget to turn the lights on
  • Helps with sudden tunnels and storms
  • Other drivers see you sooner in fading light
  • Pairs well with Adaptive Headlights

Limitations

Some systems don't react quickly enough in fog (which is bright but low-visibility) — you may still need to switch lights on manually.
