What is Battery Pre-Conditioning?

EV batteries have a 'happy' temperature window — usually around 20–40°C. Pre-conditioning automatically warms or cools the battery before you set off or arrive at a rapid charger, so it's ready to deliver — or accept — full power.

How does it work?

The car uses its heat pump, resistive heater or cooling loop to bring the battery to the target temperature. It can be triggered automatically when you set a rapid charger as a navigation destination, scheduled via the app, or run as part of a departure timer.

What does it feel like?

You barely notice it happening, but you'll see faster charging speeds at the plug and stronger acceleration on a cold morning. On a long trip, the navigation will quietly start warming the pack 20–30 minutes before you arrive at the charger.

Limitations

Uses energy from the battery (or from the grid if plugged in), so range can drop slightly in very cold conditions. Some cars only pre-condition when a rapid charger is set as the destination in the built-in navigation, not a third-party app.

  • Slow charging speeds in winter when forgotten
  • Heat pump faults limit warming in cold climates
