Plug & Charge Explained
Plug the cable in and walk away — no app, card or PIN needed.
What is Plug & Charge?
Plug & Charge (ISO 15118) is a standard that lets the car and the charger authenticate each other automatically. Insert the cable and charging just starts; payment is handled in the background using a digital certificate stored in the car.
How does it work?
When you buy the car or sign up with a charging network, a secure certificate is installed in the vehicle. When you plug in at a compatible charger, the car presents that certificate, the charger checks it with the network, and a session is opened against your account — no card tap, no app, no QR code.
What does it feel like?
Pull up to a rapid charger, plug in, and the screen says 'Authorising…' then 'Charging'. The bill appears in the app or by email at the end of the month.
Benefits
- ✓Fastest possible start to a charge
- ✓No fumbling with apps or RFID cards in the rain
- ✓More secure than card payments
- ✓Works across multiple networks once enrolled
Limitations
Both the car and the charger must support ISO 15118 Plug & Charge. Network coverage is still patchy — many CCS chargers will fall back to app or contactless payment. Switching providers can require a new certificate.
Common problems
- ✓Certificate not installed or expired
- ✓Charger advertises Plug & Charge but falls back to app
- ✓Authorisation timeouts on poor mobile signal
