Rain-Sensing Wipers Explained

Adjust wiper speed automatically based on how hard it's raining.

What are Rain-Sensing Wipers?

Rain-sensing wipers turn themselves on, off and faster or slower depending on the amount of water on the windscreen — no need to fiddle with the stalk.

How do they work?

A small optical sensor behind the rear-view mirror bounces infrared light off the inside of the windscreen. Water on the outside scatters that light; the more scatter, the more rain, and the faster the wipers run.

What does it feel like?

A passing shower triggers a single sweep, then nothing. As the rain gets heavier, the wipers speed up smoothly all the way to full speed.

Benefits

  • One less thing to think about in changing weather
  • Smoother response than manual intermittent
  • Better visibility in sudden downpours

Limitations

Can over-react to spray from lorries or to washer fluid. The sensor must stay clean — a smear on the inside of the glass right behind the mirror will confuse it.
