Rear Cross Traffic Alert Explained

Warns of approaching vehicles when you're reversing out of a parking space.

What is Rear Cross Traffic Alert?

Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) warns you of cars, bikes and sometimes pedestrians approaching from either side when you're reversing — typically out of a parking bay where your view is blocked by parked vehicles.

How does it work?

The same rear corner radars used for Blind Spot Monitoring point outwards to either side. When reverse gear is selected, they scan a wide arc behind the car. An approaching vehicle triggers a warning beep and an arrow on the reversing camera display.

What does it feel like?

You're backing out of a tight supermarket bay. Before you see the other car coming down the aisle, your screen shows a red arrow and the car beeps urgently — giving you time to stop.

Benefits

  • Reduces low-speed parking collisions
  • Compensates for blocked sightlines
  • Some systems can apply the brakes for you
  • Works alongside the reversing camera

Limitations

Detection range is limited to a few car-lengths. Snow, mud or stickers on the rear bumper can disable the sensors. Always still turn and look.
