Battery / Charging Warning

The battery isn’t being charged — you’re running on borrowed time.

What it means

A red battery icon with + and − terminals. The charging system (alternator, drive belt or battery) isn’t delivering the voltage the car needs. The engine keeps running on the battery alone — but only for around 20–60 minutes before everything dies.

What to do

  1. 1Turn off non-essential electrics (heated seats, demister, radio) to save power.
  2. 2Drive directly to a garage or home — don’t turn the engine off if you can avoid it; it may not restart.
  3. 3Get the alternator and battery tested. Don’t leave it more than a day or two.

Likely causes

  • Failing alternator
  • Snapped or slipping serpentine/auxiliary belt
  • Loose or corroded battery terminals
  • Battery at end of life
