Investigate soonamber light

Engine Management / Check Engine

Engine isn’t running quite right — get it diagnosed soon.

What it means

An outline of an engine block, glowing amber. It means the car’s on-board computer (the ECU) has spotted a fault in the engine, emissions or fuel system. The car will usually still run, but performance and emissions may be affected. If the light flashes, it’s serious — pull over safely as soon as you can.

What to do

  1. 1If solid amber: you can usually drive home or to a garage, but get it scanned within a few days.
  2. 2If flashing: reduce speed, avoid heavy acceleration, and head to a garage as soon as it’s safe.
  3. 3Note any other symptoms — rough idle, loss of power, misfires — to tell the mechanic.

Likely causes

  • Faulty oxygen (O2) sensor
  • Loose or damaged fuel cap
  • Failing ignition coil or spark plug
  • MAF (mass air flow) sensor reading incorrectly
  • Catalytic converter or EGR fault
Rough UK cost

Diagnostic scan: £30–£80. Repairs vary hugely — from £15 (fuel cap) to £1,000+ (catalytic converter).
