ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)
Your brakes still work — but the anti-lock safety net is off.
What it means
An amber circle with the letters ABS. Your normal brakes are unaffected and the car will stop as usual, but in an emergency stop on a slippery surface the wheels can lock up because the anti-lock system has switched itself off. It’s also an MOT failure.
What to do
- 1Drive with extra care — leave bigger gaps, avoid hard braking on wet or loose surfaces.
- 2Book it in within a week or two; don’t leave it indefinitely.
- 3If the main red BRAKE light comes on at the same time, treat it as critical and don’t drive.
Likely causes
- •Dirty or damaged ABS wheel-speed sensor (most common)
- •Damaged sensor wiring around the wheels
- •Faulty ABS module
- •Low brake fluid
Rough UK cost
Sensor replacement: £100–£300 per wheel. ABS module: £400–£1,200.
