Stop drivingred light
Brake System Warning
Could be the handbrake — or a serious brake fault. Don’t ignore it.
What it means
A red circle with an exclamation mark, often with the word BRAKE. It can mean the simplest thing in the world (handbrake still on) or something dangerous (low brake fluid, worn pads, or a hydraulic fault). Always investigate before driving any distance.
What to do
- 1First check: is the handbrake fully released?
- 2If still on, check the brake fluid reservoir under the bonnet — top up with the right grade if low.
- 3If the pedal feels soft, spongy or sinks to the floor: do not drive. Call recovery.
- 4If fluid level was low, get it inspected immediately — you may have a leak.
Likely causes
- •Handbrake not fully off
- •Low brake fluid (worn pads or a leak)
- •Faulty brake fluid level sensor
- •Hydraulic system fault
Rough UK cost
Pads: £100–£250 per axle. Fluid change: £50–£100. Master cylinder: £250–£500.
