Charging Port Not Locked (EV)

The charge port is open or unlocked — you can’t drive with it like this.

What it means

An amber icon of a charging plug or port, sometimes with an open padlock. The car has detected that the charging port flap is open, or the internal locking pin hasn’t engaged after unplugging. Many EVs refuse to shift into drive while the port is open to prevent driving away with a cable attached.

What to do

  1. 1Check that the charge port flap is fully closed and latched.
  2. 2If you’ve just unplugged, wait 10–20 seconds for the lock to disengage — some cars are slow to release.
  3. 3If the flap is closed but the light stays on, the micro-switch or lock actuator may have failed.
  4. 4Try locking and unlocking the car with the key fob to reset the system.

Likely causes

  • Charge port flap left open
  • Lock actuator stuck or failed
  • Faulty micro-switch in the charge port
  • Charge cable still partially inserted
  • Software glitch
Rough UK cost

Usually free (close the flap). Lock actuator: £100–£300. Micro-switch: £50–£150.
