Door Ajar Warning

A door, boot or bonnet isn’t fully closed — check before driving.

What it means

A red icon of a car with one of the doors open. The door-ajar switch on a door, boot or bonnet is registering that the latch hasn’t fully engaged. It’s usually obvious which one is open, but sometimes the boot or bonnet is only slightly ajar and the switch is borderline.

What to do

  1. 1Check every door, the boot and the bonnet. Open and close each one firmly.
  2. 2If the light stays on after closing everything, try lubricating the door latch with WD-40 — the switch can stick.
  3. 3If it still won’t go off, a door switch may have failed. It’s safe to drive but get it fixed to avoid a flat battery (interior lights stay on).

Likely causes

  • Door, boot or bonnet not fully closed
  • Faulty or sticky door-ajar micro-switch
  • Wiring fault in the door harness (often where the wires flex by the hinge)
  • Bonnet or boot latch out of alignment
Rough UK cost

Usually free to fix (close it properly). Door switch: £30–£80 fitted. Wiring repair: £50–£150.
