Forward Collision Warning

The car thinks you’re approaching traffic too fast — brake or steer.

What it means

A red or amber icon of a car with an impact star or radar waves in front of it, often with an urgent audible alert. The forward radar/camera has calculated that you’re closing on the vehicle ahead faster than is safe. Some systems will also apply the brakes automatically (AEB).

What to do

  1. 1Brake or steer immediately to increase the gap to the vehicle ahead.
  2. 2If it was a false alarm (e.g. a car turning off ahead), the light will go out once the risk passes.
  3. 3If the light stays on permanently, the sensor may be dirty or misaligned. Clean the front grille/number-plate area where the radar is mounted.
  4. 4Get it checked if it keeps triggering falsely — the sensitivity may need recalibration.

Likely causes

  • Genuine risk of collision (most common)
  • Dirty radar sensor or camera lens
  • Sensor misalignment after a minor bump or new number plate
  • Faulty radar or camera module
Rough UK cost

Usually free (it’s a warning). Sensor recalibration: £150–£400. Replacement: £500–£1,500.
