4WD / AWD Fault Light
The four-wheel-drive system has a fault — you may be running in two-wheel drive.
What it means
An amber icon saying 4WD, AWD or showing a drivetrain schematic. The system has detected a fault in the transfer case, centre differential, driveshaft or an axle coupling. Many systems default to front-wheel drive when faulty, so the car still drives — but traction in mud, snow or off-road will be severely reduced.
What to do
- 1If driving in slippery conditions, reduce speed and avoid steep or loose surfaces.
- 2Check the owner’s handbook — some systems need a specific reset procedure (e.g. turning the wheels lock-to-lock).
- 3Get it diagnosed within a few days. Ignoring it can damage the remaining healthy components.
- 4If the light is flashing, pull over and stop — a serious mechanical fault may be developing.
Likely causes
- •Failed transfer-case actuator or solenoid
- •Worn centre differential clutch pack
- •Faulty wheel-speed or driveshaft sensor
- •Damaged driveshaft or CV joint
- •Low or old transfer-case / differential fluid
Rough UK cost
Fluid change: £80–£200. Sensor: £100–£300. Transfer-case repair: £500–£2,000.
