Glow Plug (Diesel)

Normal at start-up on a diesel — only a problem if it stays on.

What it means

An amber icon that looks like two or three coiled springs. On a diesel, this lights up briefly when you switch on the ignition while the glow plugs pre-heat the cylinders for easy starting. Wait for it to go out before cranking. If it stays on, flashes, or comes on while driving, there’s a fault.

What to do

  1. 1At cold start: wait for the light to go out before turning the key further.
  2. 2If it stays on or flashes after starting: book a diagnostic — usually a failed glow plug or relay.
  3. 3Hard cold-starting and white smoke on a frosty morning is the classic symptom.

Likely causes

  • One or more failed glow plugs
  • Faulty glow plug relay or control module
  • Wiring fault in the glow plug circuit
Rough UK cost

Glow plug: £80–£200 per plug fitted. Relay/module: £150–£400.
