Just so you knowamber light
Low Fuel Warning
You’re running low — but you usually have 30–50 miles of range left.
What it means
An amber fuel-pump icon, usually accompanied by a range estimate on the dashboard. It means the fuel level has dropped to the reserve tank (typically 5–10 litres, depending on the car). The car will still run normally, but running very low can cause the fuel pump to overheat and pick up sediment from the bottom of the tank.
What to do
- 1Don’t panic — most cars have 30–50 miles of range once the light appears, but this varies by model and driving style.
- 2Find a petrol station within the next 20–30 miles to be safe.
- 3Avoid running the tank dry repeatedly — it can damage the fuel pump and clog the injectors.
Likely causes
- •Fuel level below reserve threshold
- •Faulty fuel level sender unit (light stays on or flickers even with fuel in the tank)
Rough UK cost
Fuel: whatever the pump charges. Fuel pump replacement if damaged: £300–£700.
