Power Steering (EPS) Warning

Steering still works — but it’s about to get heavy.

What it means

An amber steering wheel, often with an exclamation mark. On modern electric power steering (EPS) systems this means the assistance has been reduced or switched off. You can still steer, but it will suddenly feel much heavier, especially at low speeds.

What to do

  1. 1Try a quick fix first: pull over safely, switch the engine off for 30 seconds, then restart.
  2. 2If it clears, drive gently to a garage. If not, expect very heavy steering — leave more space and avoid tight manoeuvres.
  3. 3On older hydraulic systems, also check the power steering fluid level.

Likely causes

  • Software glitch (often clears with a restart)
  • Faulty steering angle or torque sensor
  • Failing electric power steering motor
  • Low fluid (on hydraulic systems)
Rough UK cost

Diagnostic: £40–£80. Sensor: £150–£400. EPS motor/rack: £600–£1,500.
