Seatbelt Reminder

Someone hasn’t buckled up — or the sensor thinks they haven’t.

What it means

A red icon of a seated person with a diagonal belt across them, often with an audible chime. The weight sensor in a seat has detected someone sitting there (or a heavy bag) and the corresponding seatbelt hasn’t been fastened. Some systems also monitor the rear seats.

What to do

  1. 1Make sure every occupied seat has its belt clicked in properly.
  2. 2If the light stays on with the belt fastened, try unbuckling and re-buckling a few times — the buckle switch may be sticky.
  3. 3If a heavy shopping bag is on the seat, move it to the boot or footwell to stop the sensor triggering.
  4. 4Persistent false alarms usually mean a failed buckle or seat sensor — book it in.

Likely causes

  • Seatbelt not fastened
  • Heavy object on an unoccupied seat
  • Faulty seatbelt buckle switch
  • Failed seat occupancy sensor (the pressure pad in the seat base)
Rough UK cost

Usually free (buckle up!). Buckle switch: £40–£100. Seat sensor: £150–£400.
