Service Due / Oil Life Reminder

Your car is due a routine service — no panic, just book it in.

What it means

An amber spanner or the words SERVICE / MAINTENANCE. The car’s computer has reached a mileage or time interval (or calculated that the oil has degraded) and is reminding you to book a service. It’s not a breakdown — the car is safe to drive — but leaving it too long can invalidate warranties and reduce engine life.

What to do

  1. 1Check the service book or dashboard menu to see exactly what’s due (oil change, inspection, brake check, etc.).
  2. 2Book a service at a reputable garage within the next few hundred miles.
  3. 3After the service, the garage should reset the reminder. If doing your own servicing, consult the handbook for the reset procedure.

Likely causes

  • Mileage or time interval reached since last service
  • Oil degradation algorithm triggered (based on driving style, temperature, cold starts)
  • Previous service not reset properly
Rough UK cost

Interim service: £120–£250. Full service: £200–£400. Main dealer tends to be 30–50% more.
