Investigate soonamber light
Traction Control / ESC (Electronic Stability Control)
The car has detected wheel slip or loss of stability — ease off.
What it means
An amber icon of a car with wavy skid marks behind it. The system has detected one or more wheels spinning faster than they should (traction control) or the car sliding sideways (stability control). It usually flickers briefly while it corrects the problem. If it stays on solid, there’s a fault in the system.
What to do
- 1If it flickers: ease off the accelerator until the tyres regain grip. This is normal on wet roads or loose surfaces.
- 2If it stays on solid after start-up: the system has detected a fault. Drive gently and book a diagnostic check.
- 3If it comes on with the ABS light, get it scanned within a few days — the wheel-speed sensors are shared.
Likely causes
- •Wet, icy or gravel surface causing temporary wheel spin
- •Faulty wheel-speed sensor
- •Damaged sensor wiring
- •Failed steering-angle sensor
- •Faulty ABS/ESC control module
Rough UK cost
Sensor replacement: £100–£300 per wheel. Module repair: £400–£1,200.
